You've left out a lot of important details, but assuming that you have a fairly standard generator, and assuming you are talking about switching regulation of your output voltage, then you should be fine. The generator will still need the minimum load it requires, but using a switching regulator is not a problem on the generator side. Just ensure that youre switching rate is relatively high compared to your generator rpm's. Of course, if you're really talking about an AC source (i.e. an alternator), then you'll want to rectify the output prior to trying to regulate it for DC.
