  1. for long term use, you should check out Home Depot online and type "emergency generator" they start at low as $1500.00 for a hard wired unit, the install will be a bit expensive, but well worth it if you think you will be off the grid for more than a day.
  2. You have to figure what your needs will be to operate different appliances. You have to add them all up and get the kilowatt usage of all necessary appliances and then buy a stand by generator. They have all different watt ages and prices. Don't forget that they usually run on gasoline and during major weather events you may not be able to get any, so you will have to look into how to safely store gasoline for your needs. The biggest generator in the world won't run if it has no fuel. These are for standby use so don't figure on running the whole house by it. You need power for refers, hot water and water pumps and sometimes cooking. We do a lot of out door grilling when we lose power in the summer. If you have small kids then you can add a TV to protect you insanity. Hopefully we will be able to control violent weather or at least predict it more to save lives. Property can be replaced.
