what kind of emergency generator should I buy? live in Milton fla. in a new 1700 sq. ft. home I was wondering what kind of emergency gen. would be the best to buy also how do I know how big of a gen. do I need I have a 200 amp panel in my garage the house is situated on a slab
Is a natural gas generator a good emergency power idea? I have been thinking of buying a nat gas generator for emergency use. But I wonder if the pumping stations that pump natural gas would go down during an electrical outage. If they do a natural gas generator wouldn't do me much good? Is this true? Also can you think of other advantages and disadvantages to a gas or diesel generator?
Generator for emergency use? I have an old 11 hp snowblower engine that runs pretty good. I'd like to connect it to a generator to use when the power goes out from storms to run a few things in the house. How big a generator would I need and where would one obtain a used one?
When using RV generator to power house in emergency GFI trips in RV? I shut off main in house and all breakers. Then start (4.4 kw)generator and plug male to male wire from RV outside receptical to house outside receptical. When I turn 1 breaker on in the house, the RV inside GFI circuit trips..... BUT when I do the same with a portable generator (3kw) it works just fine for running lights and the fridge? WHAT IS WRONG?
My emergency generator says "Cycle" "50" on the generator. Does that mean it is not for 60 cycle electric? I inherited an emergency Honda electrical generator.. the generator side is American made and looks very standard to me, but oddly enough, it says "Cycle 50" on the generator. Now, I thought all electric in the US was 60 cycles per sectond. Why in the world does this say 50. Do I have an oddball thing here that is useless, or is this probably just a misprint or a misundestanding on my part. I want to use the generator to run my small well pump in emergency if the electric goes out.
Emergency generator for small business - single or triple phase? We are a small business that has 15 refrigerators protecting our stock - 9 commercial refrigerators 115Volt/60 Hertz/1Phase and 6 residential refrigerators - 20 amp. We are in the process of installing an emergency generator to protect only our refrigerators and 2 UPS servers. I'm working with two electricians who are bidding on the project. One is telling me that we need a three phase generator (30KVA). The other electrician is recommending a single phase 14KVA. I'm confused - since all of our refrigerators are single phase as are the two UPS servers, and each of the refrigerators and servers are on dedicated circuits. Do you think we need a triple phase generator? Thank you in advance for any help you can offer. All the best, Paige
Can a generator be connected to a 220v outlet to provide emergency power for a house? If an electric generator with 220v single phase output is connected to a home electrical system through a 220v outlet and the main breaker in the breaker box is turned off to disconnect the house from the city power, will the generator then power the house without feeding power back to the city power grid? Could an existing outlet be used, such as an electric dryer outlet, if the load from the house was first adjusted to ensure that it was less than the breaker capacity on the dryer outlet? What are the dangers to doing this (aside from those related directly to generating your own power)? What is the correct way to do this without spending a thousand or more dollars on automatic transfer switches and such? The house in question has 200A service and would be provided with a 12kW generator. Most lighting is CF so excepting appliances normal power usage profile for the house is well within the generators capacity. When running on emergency power major power consuming appliances (ovens, stove, dryer, AC) would not be used or would be engaged only after ensuring that sufficient capacity was available.
How does a commercial contractor get a permit to move an exising emergency generator from one site to another? I have to find out how to get a commercial contractor licensing information to move an emergency generator. I can't get a hold of anyone in the state offices (go figure!) and I need to get this info to them very soon. Any leads? I work for an Engineering Firm and we have already begun work on this COMMERCIAL project with a contractor who is... under contract, but not licensed to move this kind of equipment. They asked us to get a permit, but our insurance won't even cover us for this type of work. Anyway, the point is, This is already set in stone, but they want us to at least ather the info for them. But the State of IOWA is not returning any of my calls, and google is - for the first time in a long time - not very helpful.
Emergency Generator Power during no power outage.? I recently overheard some people talking about power, and one of the fellows brought up a very confusing statement. One guy related that he had a power generator that used very little if any fuel to work, and that it supplied his whole house with power during an outage on 3 occasions with no incident. Intrigued I listened to them more intently. This gentleman said he was going to cancel his commercial power, and use the generator exclusively for his home needs. At the mention of this the other man piped in with the "fact" that to disconnect from commercial power and use generated power was illegal during a time when commercial power was in service and available. That made no sense to me. How is that illegal, if that absurd statement is even true? I guess i mean that if you were to totally disconnect from commersh power. Is it illegal then to use generated power, If commersh was still readily available in the area. I got the impression from the conversation that we had no option but to use commersh unless it was an emergency and nothing else during normal operating times. The answers are great though very insightful.
fuel leak in emergency generator? Living absolutely on the end of the power line, I get a lot of power failures. I have a 3000 watt power generator that runs on gas. I usually forget to turn the gas off at the petcock, but have never had a problem, The other day, I went out and it was leaking all over. Evidently had been for a while, since the crankcase was full of gas. Anyway, question is - shouldn't the float and/or the petcock shut the gas off? Seems to me like they must both be bad at this point. Just looking for opinions, or people who have had the same problem. Hey Warren, thanks for the info. I think the filter will probably do the job. But I guess the petcock must be bad. Sounds like a replacer! Thanks
Opinion on buying a generator for a house? I am curious what others think about the quality and efficiency of emergency generators that are used for houses. I am not talking about portable generators Also what are the best brands... bang for your buck?
Where are emergency generators in dormitories generally located? This is research for fiction. It's an older building. Would it be in the basement or located outside? Also: What are different ways they are powered? If they are all fuel powered is there exhaust? How long would they supply power? How much noise do they make?
Bicycle generator in case of an emergency.? I remember watching television many years ago and on it, it had a person watching television and using a bicycle generator to power the television. I mean a generator that could produce a fairly large output I don't mean to power a small little lamp on a bike. I don't see why you can't use this application to draw water from a well or power lights in their home. To help communities in smaller countries where you have have access to power or batteries or fossil fuels fail them or in case of an emergency.
what size generator do I need? Elec. bill is too high, so I wanna run 2HP swimming pool pump via generator. It's 240V. How big a generator do I need? Is diesel less to purchase than gas? Is diesel cheaper to run? Can I run the pool say 6 hrs a day on generator designed for emergency back-up?
I need to store about 50/100 gallons of gasoline for winter (generator-emergencies etc) How? I want it to be safe of course and probably above ground (for gravity flow) to fill jugs. I heard storing gasoline for a long time tends to collect water or condensation in it somehow. I don't want water in my gas! Also, does it need to be vented or sealed off tightly? Ever heard of lightening striking a gas storage tank ? I need to know ALL the best advice and safe solutions to do this. Thanks! Teri
What Sized Generator do I need? I need a generator for emergencies to run the essentials in my house if the power goes out. I may never use it, but want to have it just in case. I don't want to break the bank, but I also want to be able to power my sump pump, refridgerator, and a few other things.
Does the emergency button in an elevator still work during blackout? This sounds weird, but I'm writing a book, and I need to make it as real as possible. So, if people are stuck in an elevator during a blackout, does the emergency button still work on a separate power generator like hospitals? Or, just tough luck? Now, if a fire also breaks out during that period of time because of a candle, does that change anything? It's a weird question, I know, but all help would be great. Real life stories would be even better.
Gasoline and generator storage? We have an emergency generator for medical equipment in case of power failure. What should be done about the fuel in the generator? It has not been used for almost a year and a half. I remove as much fuel as I could, but there is still some in I can’t siphon out. Is it OK to leave this small amount of fuel in the generator? Do I then add new fuel to test it and run it for an hour or so?
How large should a generator be for......? Im thinking of buying a generator in case of power outages which Im sure will increase inthe years to come. How large of one should I buy? They are very expensive and I dont want to buy one that is too expensive and more than I need. I need enough to run a small fan which blows heat from a natural gas fireplace, maybe a single light or two and maybe a tv so you can get emergency reports, who could help me...thanks in advance.
How would it be possible to redirect you power needs in case of an emergency.? I understand all the wiring goes directly to the power box which in turn goes to the power lines. If you were to be self sufficient in case of an emergency, would it be possible to divert and directly use you own power source ie a generator; similar to hospitals. Sometimes when you use generators you have to bring either the appliance to the generator or vice versa. Instead of getting all the rooms and electrical wiring connected together to then automatically plug into a generator. So you the home and the people living in it can still go about there business without be affected to greatly. The question is, is this possible.
why would a 3 phase back up generator cause plug tester to light up all three lights? These are emergency outlets in a Nursing/Rehab Facility. When system is on normal street power the outlets test correctly, but when the generator is engaged and power is transferred the outlet tester lights up all three lights. Tested the hot and neutral separately and got voltage at both. This is a 3 phase generator and the problem tests the same at all receptacles in the system. Thanks for any guidance it's late and I'm stumped.
Question about generator size to power a home? I have a 1600sqft home with a 100amp box... 3 or 4 different 30amp circuits. How much Wattage would a portable generator need to be to run the necessary emergency systems in my house? my lights, well water pump, and water heater/boiler? Anyone have experience with generator power? Thanks.
where can i find free study material covering emergency and standby generators? i am looking for study guides\materials for beginners to help me understand the function of ups, static switches, emergency power and standby generators on an industrial scale 2000+amp systems ok, russell electric low voltage emergency generator control switch gear with liebert series 610 continuous tie 1500kva ups's....2 of them
How can I make a diesel generator from an Engine? One which can run 240v electrics, preferably 2 lights and maybe 1 item of high load (fridge). Only as an emergency measure. I have fair mechanical skill and the engine will be stationary mounted, I'd like to know what size of engine I'll need ,how to do it and whether it's feasible.
I Need A Emergency Power Supply For House For 16 KW ,Anyone Have Any Inexpensive Ideas? We live in a rural area.. we are looking at solar, wind, and battery backup and generators.. We really need enough to supply our house due to the harsh weather conditions here .The power doesnt fail often but I have a gut feeling we need the backup. We looked at generators that run about 3000 just for the generator but would like your ideas as to what would be a good investment or idea for backup.Any links to alternative power ideas that would supply 16 kw would be helpful or if you have ideas please let us know..Thanks for any info, also would like to mention im not physically able to build my own anything but maybe could hire someone locally if there were good enough plans for something.
Does a Frigidaire refrigerator have an inline fuse? I have a two year old refrigerator that just quit working. The light come on but the fan and compressor do not. I was running the unit off of my emergency generator and the water pump kicked in and tripped the breaker. I think it probably created a low voltage situation. Anyway the refrigerator is not working now. I hope there is a fuse or switch I can check and not a blown compressor.
Can I operate more than one device on a 12v to 120v power inverter? I want to use my car as an emergency generator next hurricane season, so I'm going to buy a 12v DC to 120v AC power converter (150 watt output) that plugs into my car's cigarette lighter. It only has one outlet, but with an extension cord I hope to power a 60-watt lamp, 4-watt boombox and 36-watt fan. The car will be idling in the driveway, so no danger of draining the battery. Any problems with this arrangement?
How to make an electric generator? Being that its hurricane season here on the east coast I was wondering if anyone knew how to make simple electrical generators using an old lawn mower engine? I would go out and buy one but I'm currently in college and cash is tight but I can find old lawn mower engines everywhere. Im looking for some plans that could be used to power a small refrigerator during emergencies
Why do people always wait until the last minute to buy emergency supplies for a hurricane? Things like batteries, generators, bottled water and plywood which folks in Texas are now having the nerve to complain about stores running out of them? Wouldn't it be a better idea to maintain a stash of these kinds of things in your attic so you wouldn't have to fight lines of 1a thousand people at Home Depot whenever there's a hurricane bearing down on you? Fuzzy, batteries have a shelf life of at least five years. Bottled water could last at least a year if not more. When these items expire after a couple of years, you simply buy new ones. What's so hard about that? Gee, I didn't know generators had shelf lives. Duhhhhh. I'll have to check the expiration date the next time I go to buy one. Don't want a stale generator. Good grief. I realize that people have a hard time buying their daily necessities but if they can't afford to maintain and replenish a simple and inexpensive emergency kit like this, then maybe they ought to consider food stamps.
I want to create my own human powered generator. Can anyone help me out? I'd like to generate 220volts with it. If possible, I'd like to store the energy in case of emergencies. As long as it's human powered. Can you suggest a website? Or if possible, plans or prototypes of these human powered generating machines. Thanks. I'd like to generate 220volts with it. If possible, I'd like to store the energy in case of emergencies. As long as it's human powered. Also If possible, I'd like to create a generator which can store energy. Can you suggest a website? Or if possible, plans or prototypes of these human powered generating machines. Thanks. Is there a good set-up for this? What do I connect to what?
Solar Powered Generator?? I'm looking to but this solar powered generator for emergency and outdoor use. Here is the product. http://www.solarhome.org/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=537 It says it can run a refrigerator. My question is for how long? Say the refrigerator uses 1000 watts how long will it can it run on the battery for this generator? What about something smaller like an appliance that uses 300 watts, how long will the battery here last? I want to know what this is capable of before I decide to buy it. Here are some of the specs for it: Powers AC products up to 1500 watts Easy to monitor, dual-outlet, AC panel Built-in 1500 watt inverter with protection features 60 amp-hour battery Rated Power: 40 watts Rated Current @ Pmax: 2.31 amps Nominal voltage: 12 volts Rated voltage @ Pmax: 17.3 Volts
HHO Hydrogen electrolyser diagram using plates not wire? Wanting to convert my emergency backup generator to use HHO. WOULD APPRECIATE ANY LINKS THAT SHOW DETAIL OF THE ELECTROLYSER CONSTRUCTION USING PLATES INSTEAD OF WIRE FOR MORE SURFACE REACTIVE AREA. THANK YOU! Would still like to try it for myself, I am a very curious creature and like to monkey around with new concepts.
wood burning generator/ steam engine generator? Since there is a lot of unrest in the world, our economy is in some trouble and I live in an area plagued by hurricanes... I want the ability to generate my own electricity to run my home. What I am searching for is not intended to be used under normal conditions, but as an emergency source of power that could do things like heat water for a shower, keep a house (or part of a house) warm or cool during the night.... stuff like that, not a full scale, every day, all day electricity source.... emergency. I looked at generators, but when there is trouble, there is almost always a lack of gasoline. If supplies are cut off, it could be months to resupply and one can only keep so much gas around, and it is a fire/explosion hazard. I want to create some sort of wood burning electricity generator. I was thinking a steam engine type setup. I could burn wood and debris to power it. Are these available? Could I build one on my own? Maybe an oil drum, some pipes and a modified generator? In addition, how much does it cost to rent an arc welder? How difficult are they to use? And, where can I find an old oil drum.... to use as a boiler?

Do you have or plan to get emergency supplies in your home? Emergency supplies, such as canned food, bottles/jugs of water, first aid kit, blankets, flashlights, portable electric generator, radio, batteries, matches, candles, books, extra clothes, tools, emergency plans/instructions, compass, area maps, phonebook, etc.
How would I get two ATS systems to switch at the same time, turning on 2 different generators? two generators, one utility power, two ATS's. One generator is capable of handeling the house panel it is designed for, I am installing a new power cabinet that willl require its own generator as well as its own ATS. If I ran signal wires between each ATS and connected to the relay contacts, would that send a signal to ATS # 2 and switch to emergency power the same time as ATS # 1?
What would cause an generator failure? I was flying to an airport about 40NM from my home airport when i lost the generator. so i made an emergency landing and had to wait for my instructor to come with their C400. Just wondering what might have caused this, it happened while i was on crosswind for the runway Dumbasspilot jez? First of all i fly the pattern about 3 times before this happened so thats why i was on a left crosswind! secondly its a LS Navigator possitive its a Generator (said Gen fail) and the volts meter was showing a discharge. And i think any flight intructor would tell a student that was on his 4th solo to not take the risk of losing radio communcations on a VERY busy day at a non towered airport.
run electrial through outside wall? I need to install an electrical box in a room. The power for the box will be coming from a generator outside for emergencies. The outside of the house is stucco and I would have to drill through it. Is there any special tube that’s available to run the wires?
Would you use a wind up charger for your mobile phone? I imagine you've seen those emergency chargers that are available for phones that give you five minutes-worth of charge. Would you be willing to sit there winding like a fool to fill the battery completely if it meant saving tons of pollution every year? Or how about a charger attatched to your stepper or static bycicle? Excercise would be even more useful! Or how about a generator connected to your office chair. If an automatic watch gets wound by the movement of a wrist, how much energy would be generated by the whole country when it turns to get up and get coffee? Let me rephrase, would you be willing to commit a bit of elbow grease to save the planet a little bit more in exchange for having modern technology?
Can you manually re-light the pilot on a gas oven with an electric igniter? During the recent storms, I discovered that my gas furnace has an electrical fan and my gas oven has an electric igniter - therefore, neither is operational when the power goes out. Rather than investing in a generator to run the furnace fan, I'm hoping that I can manually light the pilot on the oven and use that for emergency heat. I've examined the setup & can see where to hold the match, etc. - I'm just wondering if it's safe to do it manually. Anybody know? Thanks, William! :-D
Which wires go where? Portable generator needs to be able to hookup to heatpump during emergency outage; generator has 4 @120v outlets and 1@ 240. Can I wire 240 generator outlet into heatpump, during blackouts, and how do I ? which wires go where? I have insured enough wattage in the generator to run heatpump. Just need to know how to wire it.
why don't our homes in the US come standard with DC power outlets and a large rechargable battery w/ generator don't steal my idea, this is considered "in writing" and I said it first. I think it would be a very useful addition to homes since most of our electronics require DC power. Just about anything you plug into the wall that has a big black box on the cord is taking the 120V AC voltage from the electric companies and turning it into a much lower 6V to 24V DC power. This could be avoided by having a self contained power source in the basement with a gas powered generator. Think about it. with our homes battery powered, a 'power-out' could shut down your neighborhood and you still have your DC powered electronics. your laptops, cable modems, routers, etc will still be working. My home uses a cable modem that also takes care of my phone line. in a blackout, I loose my telephone. But not if it has a battery backup. They already make battery backups but why not have it central to the house. and with gasolene recharging it you have that power in case of emergencies.
What should I do? The battery in my Rabbit died, and...? ...I don't have any more. Do you think I could somehow rig up the emergency generator, or would that make too much noise? Any suggestions are appreciated, I'm very horny. Fingerlick, I think I'm in love with you. Dave, Spot DOES have a sibling, it was produced with the help of the Cupacabra in the basement.
