Portable Diesel Generator Knowledge Base
Why do my lights flicker with my portable generator? I live in southern Indiana, and am currently living through an awesome ice storm. Anyway, my parents bought a diesel powered portable generator. It is hooked into the main panel of the house. When you crank it up and turn the lights in the house on, they flicker, as does the TV screen. It has proper voltage on each leg of the 240. I brought my generator over and everything works fine. Any ideas? It is an All Power Diesel 6700 watt generator. Should be about 6500 watts more than I need to keep two 100 watt light bulbs burning strong! Runs strong, with no stalling or hiccups. Its an All-power 6500 watt air cooled diesel generator.
Need help with my portable generator - no power output? I own a Chinese made diesel generator. 10HP, 5kW, which recently stopped putting out power. The generator "head" has three separate power outputs; 120VAC (#1) 120VAC (#2) and 12VDC for battery charging. All three ceased output simultaneously. I've tried "re-exciting" or "flashing" the alternator, which didn't do anything other than make it "knock" when it generated a magnetic field. I've been told my voltage regulator may have failed, but I have no knowledge of how the AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulator) on the high-voltage side may work to verify. Ideas? Thanks!
How many hours can I expect this generator to last? I have a Kubota GL7000 portable diesel generator..... now I've followed the recommended maint. schedule on it, new fuel filters, oil filters, oil changes, etc..... I have just under 1,000 hours on it right now, it smokes a little when it's cold but when it warms up it runs nice and smooth and with no smoke, it seems to me that it's running really solid and I have no complaints or problems, but I'm curious how long a generator like this (2 years old) should last me? I use this generator for my business about once or twice a week.... sometimes just for an hour or so and sometimes it'll run 8 or 10 hours straight
Running multiple computers off of a generator or battery bank? Hi, I am working on a project at the moment where I will need to run 16 computers solely from generated power. I have several ideas for this, but not sure as to how I should be going about it. Basically, 16 computers, each with the same specs that I have tested with a Watt-Hour meter to only draw < 100W even running resource heavy games on max settings, yet have 400W power supplies. At work we have an UPS with 56 12v rechargeable batteries that take full load of the building when we lose mains, a diesel generator starts up when loss of power is sensed and charges the battery bank. This is the setup I want, just not so massive. Rather than have a small portable generator power all the computers (Don't think that would work would it?) I want to have an unknown amount of batteries that will run all these PCs (Don't worry about monitors and peripherals, I just care about the PCs at this time) for a decent amount of time then have the generator charge up the batteries. During the day, would have a solar array charging the batteries. Firstly, based on that figure of 16 computers with 400W power supplies, how many batteries would I need to run these computers for a few hours (noting that the maximum I have seen them draw is 100W & 320mA max) without requiring a topup from the generator & what would be the best type of battery and generator (affordable and portable) to get. I know I need an inverter, again what would the power rating need to be for that? Please, any useful information would be very much appreciated. Ash
Help with cold diesel? I have a block engine heater on my 1985 mercedes, but it uses AC power. Any ideas of how I can warm my engine without an AC power source? PLEASE HELP! My car is stranded until the weather warms up unless I can warm up the engine to start it! Note: A portable AC generator is out of the question- too expensive
