Diesel generator power factor ? Why all the diesel generator sets have a power factor of 0.8 as a standard power factory , and could we get a diesel generator set at 0.9 power factor ???
Question on Diesel Power generators? How long can I run a Diesel Power Generator before I have to stop it to give it a rest? Also, how many years can I expect a Cummins Diesel Generator to run if maintained properly? One more thing. In the spec sheet of the generator I'm looking at, it states 161 gsm/hp-hr. Is that 161 Grams per Horse Power per hour? So what does that mean> How many liters per hour does that translate too. Thanks for your answers. Greetings from Iran
How many watt generator do I need to power a 8KVA UPS? I want to be able to plug my APC Smart-UPS RT 8000VA 208V into a diesel generator when our power will be down for an extended period of time. The max OUTPUT of the APC unit is 6400w. Does that mean I need at least a 6400w Generator?
What type of generator do I need to power a 180amp mig welder.? I have a van and wish to kit it out with generator, welder and power tools. The genrator needs to cope with a 180amp rated welder plus 110v power tools (grinder, drill etc) being used at the same time. The generator needs to be diesel powered not petrol. The ones i've looked at are rated in Kva's. Not too sure how to work out how many Kva's i will require. Help please.
An electrical power system consists of identical diesel generators? An electrical power system consists of identical diesel generators, each generator. Has a constant failure rate of 0.5 per year. Calculate the reliability of the following arrangement-three months after the initial commissioning date. 1. Only one generator operating. 2. Only generator operating, one generator standby. 3. One generator operating, two generators standby.
I accidentally put diesel in a kersone powered generator, will it hurt it? We have a kerosene fueled generator that I put diesel into by mistake, it's running, but doesn't seem to be running as fast as it should, will it hurt it to let it burn the rest of the diesel, or should I drain it out and put kerosene in it? Answer only if you know for a fact what you're talking about please.
Why does my diesel household generator provide better power than my public line? When the household generator quicks on in an outage, the lights are brighter, the floor fans work better, etc.... When we are using the public utilities current, the lights are dim, the fans are slow and every time our wellpump quicks on, the lights flicker and dim more. AND, when we have the generator on automatic, it turns on every time the wellpump comes on and then shuts off shortly after the wellpump stops. We have had the current checked by public utilities here and they said the volts coming into the house are fine but the amps which should be at 125 is only 17! The utility company (we live on an island in the Caribbean) says there must be a problem both at the pole AND in the house but how can this be when we have no problems in the house when the generator is on? Also, will running our appliances and electronics with such low amp availability damage them?
Is a natural gas generator a good emergency power idea? I have been thinking of buying a nat gas generator for emergency use. But I wonder if the pumping stations that pump natural gas would go down during an electrical outage. If they do a natural gas generator wouldn't do me much good? Is this true? Also can you think of other advantages and disadvantages to a gas or diesel generator?
want to buy a Domestic diesel generator? I need to buy a diesel generator to run a few appliances in my flat in the event of a power cut, IE a/c Refrigerator, television, computer deep freezer electric stove micro wave cooker can a 6250 w generator do this job or do I need to get something more powerful any comments welcome thanks in advance.
Why do my lights flicker with my portable generator? I live in southern Indiana, and am currently living through an awesome ice storm. Anyway, my parents bought a diesel powered portable generator. It is hooked into the main panel of the house. When you crank it up and turn the lights in the house on, they flicker, as does the TV screen. It has proper voltage on each leg of the 240. I brought my generator over and everything works fine. Any ideas? It is an All Power Diesel 6700 watt generator. Should be about 6500 watts more than I need to keep two 100 watt light bulbs burning strong! Runs strong, with no stalling or hiccups. Its an All-power 6500 watt air cooled diesel generator.
Need help with my portable generator - no power output? I own a Chinese made diesel generator. 10HP, 5kW, which recently stopped putting out power. The generator "head" has three separate power outputs; 120VAC (#1) 120VAC (#2) and 12VDC for battery charging. All three ceased output simultaneously. I've tried "re-exciting" or "flashing" the alternator, which didn't do anything other than make it "knock" when it generated a magnetic field. I've been told my voltage regulator may have failed, but I have no knowledge of how the AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulator) on the high-voltage side may work to verify. Ideas? Thanks!
micro hydro system using diesel generator? have several question about diesel alternator. First of all i want build micro hydro system using diesel alternator. That means i just take the alternator and using water to rotate the turbine and the alternator will produce the power. Do you think this system is possible to do? Before this i use the car alternator, and the problem is before alternator connected to the battery i get about 3000 RPM, but when i connect the alternator to the battery and field current occur, the RPM dropped to 500 RPM. So the alternator can't produce the current. So i want try using diesel alternator. Since we know diesel alternator power output in AC, so no field current needed. If i get around 3000 RPM, whether diesel alternator produce the power? Or it same with car alternator.
Steam Locomotive Power Comparison-To Diesel Eng? The Diesel is Power from Eng,thru Generator to Wheels? Steam Eng was ,Raw Power to the Drivers? Are these staments Correct? Appreciate any Info. as to Power-is and was transfered to Move. Train.
Diesel generator problem? A 3 phase 150 kVA 380V stand-by generator is driven at 1500 rev/min by a diesel engine. It delivers 200 A at a power factor of 0.85 lag. The generator operates at an efficiency of 96% and the diesel operates at an efficiency of 48%. Calculate 1. Torque in shaft 2. Fuel consumption of the diesel in litres per hour given that the calorific value of the fuel is 38MJ/litre.
want to build an electric generator from an electric motor, how do I do this? I want to build an electric generator from an electric motor, how do I do this? I need planes on how to build a generator from an electric motor. I am wanted to use a 16 HP Power Diesel tractor motor. Can any one help? I am useing Diesel power because diesel fuel last longer than gas when in storage. Is this correct? I want a AC Generator.
Generator Powered Cars? Ok my question is if it is possible to run a locomotive with electric engines powered by a diesel generator why can't we do the same for cars? We already know that the 0-60 for an electric motor is better than a gasoline. This is because an electric motor can hit its top RPM much faster. So wouldn't creating this car be a substantial improvement? Also as a side note while I was in the service my MOS was in communications which require me to maintain a generator to power my shelter. That ten gallon diesel generator could run for a day without being refilled.
50/60Hz Diesel Generator Set? I intend to buy Diesel Generator sets in USA but the problem is that the Generator sets available in USA are 50/60Hz /1800rpm, pf 1.0 , 277/480V whereas in my country the Frequency is 50Hz , Voltage is 220/380V and power factor is 0.8. What shall I do to convert the US spec's to what is my requirement.
How do you calculate what size diesel generator is needed for a building's reserve electric supply? We manage howgillsbunkbarn.co.uk and to provide for a back up electrical supply when we start getting power downs and fuel shortages in the future, I want to know how to calculate what size diesel generator I will need to provide for most of heating, lighting and cooking facilities. Years ago, I arranged for a standby generator one Xmas for a Residential Care home with a lift and that worked except they could not use the lift due to it's larger requirement for power. This Bunk Barn sleeps 35 people in 8 en-suite rooms but is very 'Green' with all lights being low energy and underfloor heating providing economical comforts. Do I just add all potential electical wattages together?
is 91D (power generator mechanic) a good job..... while serving for the army and in the civilian job market? i joined the army on 20090611 (took my oath) and i'm So excited, i leave for bct march 1st and i want to make sure the job i chose 91D (power generator mechanic) is a good one,i didn't have many choices i scored a low 78 on my AS VAB, but i do love to get my hands dirty and be one of the guys. the question is will this job give me opportunity when i discharge from the Army? also will i get to cross train with diesel mechanics, hvac, and electricians?
Who Knows About Diesel Generators?? Our electric bill in Belize has tripled. Corrupt company is about to shut my power off. I need to know about diesel generators. How big do I need for a small house that has TV, computer, large fridge, lights and pool pump? Do you search by HP or watts or volts or what? I am a generator dummy. I saw a silent one online for $4800. Small and silent sounds great; $4800 sounds horrible. Anyone have ideas?
Does anyone have any leads on backup solar generators? I want to purchase a solar powered backup generator in the event that we have a power outage. I don't want a gas/diesel generator as I don't want to have to fight everyone else to get gas for a generator. I've been only able to find one solar generator that would seem to work for my home. Any suggestions?

Running multiple computers off of a generator or battery bank? Hi, I am working on a project at the moment where I will need to run 16 computers solely from generated power. I have several ideas for this, but not sure as to how I should be going about it. Basically, 16 computers, each with the same specs that I have tested with a Watt-Hour meter to only draw < 100W even running resource heavy games on max settings, yet have 400W power supplies. At work we have an UPS with 56 12v rechargeable batteries that take full load of the building when we lose mains, a diesel generator starts up when loss of power is sensed and charges the battery bank. This is the setup I want, just not so massive. Rather than have a small portable generator power all the computers (Don't think that would work would it?) I want to have an unknown amount of batteries that will run all these PCs (Don't worry about monitors and peripherals, I just care about the PCs at this time) for a decent amount of time then have the generator charge up the batteries. During the day, would have a solar array charging the batteries. Firstly, based on that figure of 16 computers with 400W power supplies, how many batteries would I need to run these computers for a few hours (noting that the maximum I have seen them draw is 100W & 320mA max) without requiring a topup from the generator & what would be the best type of battery and generator (affordable and portable) to get. I know I need an inverter, again what would the power rating need to be for that? Please, any useful information would be very much appreciated. Ash

how an alternator generates power? Diesel generator is generating power, how is generating, i need step by step, In self excitation how the alternator generates power in permanent magnet alternator how the power is generated
Off Grid power options? Does anyone currently live off grid? If so, what type of alternate power system(s) are you using? Solar? ---(I think very expensive and in this part of the country, not enough sun.) Hydro-electric? ---(may be a viable choice if I have enough current running through my stream and or enough head from a waterfall) Wind? --- (If It is installed high enough and does not obscure.) Diesel Generator---(may be ok if underground, low speed, water cooled) We are planning to build a log home in up-state Pa. as a second home for now, but our primary residence in a few years. Thanks in advance for your answers! Newt
can I produce clean water, electricity and cooling at the same time from bio-diesel or solar? This technology is called tricogeneration, but is seem as though not even money can buy it. There seems to be many false leads on the internet or there are lots of prototypes that have not hit the market yet. I have just spent $500,000.00 U.S.D on a water treatment plant and a seperate diesel generator to run a resort. I would be willing to pay much more for a more progressive system. Can some one put the components together and sell me a system that gives you distilled water, Power generation and utilizes the waste heat to produce either refrigeration and or air conditioning? The need for a bio-Diesel or solar electric generator that produces fresh water and cooling as a biproduct is crucial in most parts of the world. I have found a solar desalination plant on the internet that they produce in India but have not yet been able to buy them due to lack of responce from the web site contact (a very common thing on the internet). They are either booked, don't care or can't perform.V
what is the best way to insulate my water system for winter? we operate our own rain water catchment system, complete with water pump, pressure tank, filter system, and paloma hot water heater. Our big 4000 gallon tank is located outside, and with winter fast approaching here in southeast alaska, we need to find the best solution for insulating that intake pipe. the use of heat tape seems inevitable, but it will use a tremendous amount of power (we run a diesel generator, which proves to be very expensive)
Generator? Me and my mates are wanting to buy a cheap generator that would have enough electricity to power a guitar/bass amp or two. We don't want to spend any more than 200 to 250 quid, althougwe're hoping there'sone for cheaper than that. Either petrol or diesel too, it doesn't matter. Links would be much appreciated!
Anybody out there using a solar heated stirling engine to generate residential electricity? I am a general contractor in Texas, I am currently designing a environmentally friendly home for myself and young family to live in. I am viewing my options on electricity generation, i.e PV with battery and invertor, bio diesel generators, solar powered stirling engine, possibly offsetting solar power with wind. I have a design for a trombe wall which will help cool the house in the summer and heat it in the winter. Solar powered H2O heaters are a no brainer, My brother in the UK has one and has an abundant amount of hot H20. The cooling system will probably encompass geo-thermal energy, again a lot of systems available, unfortunately for the masses these systems are more expensive than traditional energy sucking compressors and heat exchangers. Hopefully by the time I invest in renewable energy for my home the government will offer more than a $2000.00 TAX credit toward the investment. If so please forward me details.
Is it possible to run appliances on batteries/w AC inverter and a generator that only comes on occasionally..? I want to power a water heater, a blower fan, and a small water pump continuously with a diesel generator run on Biodiesel. Is it possible to set up a system of some deep cycle batteries that will carry the load for say 1/2 hour or 1 hour and have the generator kick on automatically when the voltage drops to charge the batteries...this way the generator will not be run continuously. What would you need to set this up? Anything besides what I have mentioned? Josh
Atlanta generator fault ? three phase down on power? Hi All, I have an atlanta 215kva generator with a big Cummins diesel Engine runs perfect at 1500 rpm The alternator only produses 210 volts between the L1 L2 L3 and only 110 between the L and neutral I have checked the alternator internals and seems to be fine I have checked all the wiring and this seems OK I have checked the AVR and this seems ok When I switch one of the AVR sensor wires to a different location on the avr board to U I get 400 volts but the engine surges and the voltage drops out and picks up again So ... do you think the AVR is at fault ? as this is an old machine and dont think I will be able to buy a replacement I was wondering if anybody has any suggestions ?? Any body know how to fix generators ?? Thats the only problem, I dont have a wiring diagram ... and its a standby generator which has the automatic mains switch over built in above the alternator, so its a load of wires and they are all black and very hard to trace I think its the AVR, as someone has just done a welding job on the box and was wondering if this would affect the circuit boards ?? I have tried to contact Atlanta by email but they havent replied as of yet I have heard in some cases you need to flash the avr ?? but is this when there is no voltage My Hz are a steady 50 until I switch off the engine and it increases to 54 ?
Could the Internet be kept alive if ALL the power went out? What if there was a catastrophe or eco-terrorists shut down total power production across the planet. Would the internet switch off and die, or like all new living organisms, would it find a way to survive through backyard diesel generators and car batteries etc?!?
Single Phase or 3 Phase Generator? Hi. I need to buy a diesel generator to run my house on. We have to run at least 3 ACs at a time. The ACs consume roughly 1500W with a surge power of 4500W. Here's my question. If I get a 12KW rated generator, does that mean that each phase can only handle 4000 KW, therefore not even enough to start an AC? On the other hand if I have a single Phase 12KW generator, I'll be able to run 3-4 ACs. So is it better to have a single Phase rather than a 3 Phase? i was given this formula by a sales man KVA=SQRT3 X V X i Can you shed some light on this problem? Greetings from Iran
Remote, high altitude generator, 10 kW? For a new observatory in the Andes at 17,000 feet, we need to provide power continuously for 4 months. Requirement is 208VAC, 3 phase, 10 kW. The site is accessible by large truck, but connecting to the power grid is out of the question. We are thinking diesel generators and large fuel tanks. Any suggestions out there? Thanks.
